Ive picked up an old low compression v8 and started to strip it ill upload the whole job to this when i figure out how to upload photos...
couple questions before i start
I want to skim the 14 bolt heads to raise the compression... how far do i skim them to make them the same as a 10 bolt head?
What brand of break in oil is best for the new cam etc.?

Also my bellhousing bolts are too short for my engine stand anyone know what size and thread they are?

Thanks guys ill try and get sorted tomorrow... what about skimming heads for more compression my old work has offered to skim them but i need to find out how much skimming to do

You need to check if they have been skimmed before, check valve clearences and apply some maths - swept volume etc. Try a search on the v8 owners forum

Cheers guys so far were going well ive had a head off and looked insode the bores... no wear lip so all good there put the head back on and put the engine on its stand ive a couple photos so far ill try to upload tonight... next few days will be trying to clean the inch thick layer of sludge off of the engine then ill begin stripping it down

Thats the engine and box in the car when i brought it home.

While i was waiting for the stand to arrive i removed a head to check the bores which looked unworn... it looks like the 4 cylinders were blowing into the valley which explains the black gunk inside everything... i cleaned the head in home heating oil and refitted it to lift the engine onto the stand and havent had a chance to do anything else yet

This is the engine as it is now... plan is to clean the outside (probably take days) then strip it and clean everything then i can start throwing money at it uploadfromtaptalk1430137175006.jpg

Personally I probably wouldn't bother rebuilding a low CR 3.5, even the higher CR ones are pretty wheezy.

You'd be better off finding a tidy late 3.9 or 4.0. Noticeable more poke and much more grunty down load.

But the insurance companies would practice kama sutra on me if i said im 20 and want a 3.9... too late to change my mind now ive got the engine sitting on a stand with a head off

Not that I'm promoting this. But how would they know what displacement it was?

If i crashed i imagine theyd check haha

Depending on the engineer's knowledge/interest he has only to check the engine #
The alternative of the IC refusing to pay out could be devastating, especially if personal injury is involved. Not a chance I would ever take & if that makes me a wimp in some people's eyes, then so be it.

Would only take that chance myself if i had the money to reair or replace the car ive damaged when my insurance wont pay out.... and if i had that money i wouldnt bother lying to the insurance.. the 3.5 should be adequate im not looking for a race car the tdi's capable of speeds that i wouldnt feel safe at in a defender really i just want the noise and better acceleration as id like to have the option to overtake when im on a backroad and soneones driving extremely slowly

Finally got sh*te weather (as opposed to the monsoons we normally have) so im currently attacking the engine with gunk a toothbrush and a dishwashing brush... coming out well so far
