the discovery 1 imob stops the starter turning.. not sure on the details but the good old spider thing makes it dead when you turn the key.. I know later models and some RR imobs cut the fuel but this isn't the case on the disco 1.. not much help but probably rules out that.. have you checked that you have fuel to the cylinders? is there any chance the fuel is old and stale? have you checked that you have air to the cylinders? have you checked that the spark is strong enough to ignite the fuel you are using? have you checked that the starter is turning the engine fast enough to compress and fire?

check the ignition control module on the side off the dizzy, my 3.5 module went and had the same problems as you have, after replacing the coil and the ignition module all is well, they are about 40 - 60 quid depending on if you need a 3 into 2 core adapter

do you have aone button remote or two?
one button no spider
two button can have a spider they were not fitted till after 1996ish modle year some had them some did not

i would be inclined to check for fuel pressure and also check the interia switch has not tripped proberly a pump failure
as you have aspark you can count out the ignition side unless it is a poor orange rather than a fat blue spark
