Default Noisy Diesel Pump!!

I have a Freelander TD4 GS on a 52 plate, its done 117k and I have had no problems except it has started making a noise when the ignition is turned on and whilst driving. Previously when turning the ignition on you would hear the diesel pump in the tank starting and would then switch off, the noise has become progressively worse over the last day. I looked at the pump under the back seat and it seems to be coming from the wiring which is to the right of the pump, this afternoon it would not start so I left for awhile, I tried it again and it fired up. Does anyone know what it could be? Please help! Thanks

This may be a red herring, but when my TD5 fuel pump started getting noisy, a new fuel filter got things back to normal. It was obviously labouring a bit!
A much cheaper fix than a new pump.
