Hi I'm new to the off roading scene.
And looking at getting a def 90 and was wondering which is best for off roading.....

Diesel or petrol.
I know diesel is better in the water but is a v8 better for the grunt.

Thanks

Diesels still have a fair bit of grunt, just the aerodynamics and low gearing of defenders make them appear slow compared to other cars on the road. You shouldn't be going fast enough off road for aerodynamics to come into play and you will most probably be using low box anyway. Plus there is the fact that diesels will go further in water if you fancy getting your feet wet.

I say all of this but it completely depends on what / where you will be going. If you just post asking which is best you are likely to just get biased opinions but if you tell us what you want to do with it or how it will be used you will get yourself a much better response. Good luck.

depends if yer minted or a bit strapped for fuel cash
i run a 200tdi 90 (discovery engine) 1987 vintage, mate i lane with has a 1986 with a 4.2 v8 .
we had a full day out last sunday did exactly the same route and mileage he used £50+ of juice , i used about £20 worth .
alright his sounded better than mine and maybe on the road had more grunt, but off-road he was using low box way more than me (i only used it once on a steep decent)

Thanks for all your comments. Think a diesel is looking good. Looking forward to getting the spanners out lol

If you go for a Diesel a 200/300 tdi is the best option the 2.5td engines aren't the most powerfull. Me personally I prefer the "V8",bags of low down torque for crawling at low revs and then bursts into life when you hit the loud pedal. Obviously not as good as a diesel with a snorkel for wading but if you do a few mods you can still wade just cant swim with the tdi's.
