What are 'Jate rings' for?

As title, are they for recovery like shackles and recovery points or is there another use for them?

Originally designed for slinging Land Rovers below Helicopters. I believe Jate stands for something like Joint Air Transport Establishment
 
Can't fault your logic here - no point just leaving them permanently swinging from your chassis while not being used for vehicle recovery. Why not use them as body jewellery?
