I've had some work done to my D90 and it appears there is a Smart Nav unit in there meaning I have GPS! Button controlled, not a screen. Now, is there a way I could get this rewired to give me a positional fix connected to a tablet with mapping? As I refuse to pay a premium for my car to direct me when I'm perfectly capable of doing so myself.

Was it not part of a tracker system with the alarm. Are you sure it still works.

I bet is is posible somehow but I don't think its would be worth the hasstle, if your going to use a tablet why not use a tablet with gps built in.
If you have an tablet without gps then get a wifi or Bluetooth gps box.

Oh it still works. It was accidentally turned on and was barking instructions at me for ages. I press the button again and then it called their helpline who because I didn't want to sign up weren't too helpful!

Best free satnav app i have come across is NAVFREE, its totally free and works offline as you download the maps to your phone or tablet, been working great for me.

A tomtom with traffic is worth the £100

Mine saved me a 60-70 minute delay today on the M6 near lancaster by sending me down some lanes and back on at the next junction when a truck overturned

After a 4am start it's quite a good feeling when you're doing 60 on a parallel road while all you can see on the motorway is a sea of brake lights

The traffic on Tomtom is very good

Google maps let you import maps for offline use.

I've got the Ordanace survey map app installed for when I'm not driving, I use a cycle gps app to log my postion when I'm out on the quad and then export the data to google earth to show my route etc.

But for navigation I bought Tom tom app few years ago for £35.
