I wish I were a mechanic but I'm not my talents are elsewhere. I find in the world of garages not all mind, that honesty and integrity are lacking as I originally wrote. Profit is put above customer care

Then you have been using the wrong garages, my local garage is very good and trustworthy, the two local independent Land Rover garages local to me are amazing and bend over backwards for you, I do all my own work but I have friends and neighbours who sing their praises loudly.

Craddocks are good, it is these negative posts that slate and bang on and on and on about them and all based on someone else's "experience", I put "experience" in quotations as I am skeptical of one post wonders who just turn up ere to slate and complain.

Nobody is forcing you to use them and there must be at least 200 independent specialists to choose from in BrumLand?

my dif lock doesn't work. I found this out when I got stuck in a ditch boxing day 2017. I was driving up a woodland track 2nd gear ticking over and you might laugh but gravity just pulled it in. its was an expensive lesson

This might well be something that you can fix yourself.

But first.

How did you diagnose the failure? I ask because some people don't realise that engaging difflock will still leave you helpless if one wheel on each axle can spin.

I don't understand I thought with the dif lock engaged all wheels lock and turn in sync
I took it to A1 clutches to see if they could help. they agreed the dif lock wasn't working but could not be of further assistance.
Sensibly I should have hardcored the track. instead I bought the defender but no regrets I love that motor it has character. Just in really wet weather I have a 200m walk

No. With centre diff lock engaged, there are still open diffs in both axles. Unless you have axle lockers fitted, that is.

The diff lock feeds equal power to front and rear axles but if one wheel on both of the axles is spinning without traction you will still get stuck. It sounds like a misdiagnosis to me and the 'experts' you have spoken to don't know there arse from their elbow

Don't be too disappointed! A Landy without difflock is a pretty capable car, and more so with it engaged off the beaten track.

You can add locking differentials to both axles at considerable cost (£800 plus fitting each end) and be invincible - until you hit deep mud and all wheels spin. In practice you can get away with one (usually the back) because you've then got three wheels turning against one useless one, and that's normally good enough. What you need to know is that whilst all these aids can both keep you out of (and get you out of) trouble, they're really really really capable of getting you further into it. Most of us have found that out the hard way....

But with a bit of experience and planning you can normally avoid trouble in the standard car. If it's 'your' lane then a bit of hardcore or other hard material in the worst spots?

Or fit lockers to the diffs. Failing that, only drive within the capabilities of you or the vehicle .

Or get axle lockers. And driver training can get you a lot further in the same vehicle.

My job takes me past there every month, there is always somthing needed for an old landy.
