Wasnt sure what degree of difficulty you were wanting to prep for , as Cape town to Uk has been done in a rolls royce

That is the one RB44 based on a dodge van cab and chassis,and axles. But Mod wanted drom brakes on it, they were advised not to but did anyway. Converted back to disc they are ace

Oo interesting, have you got anymore details on the disk conversion?

I work on a pair of RB 44s for a family friend and he's always complaining about the sodding brakes. I had a look on the ex-mod forums and also the dodge forums but couldn't find anything

Other than that they are great trucks, would make a great overland vehicle. I think our friend picked his up for less than 3k each.

I found the info on a couple of sites can not remember where was along time ago searching for all the info I could find. As them RB44 look cool FC and would make a good utility/farm/work vehicle. And would make a good expedition vehicle. Just got to sort the brakes. And they are cheap as chips, and darn good shape. saw some very nice ones on mod disposal site

Need much more detailed info to give a reasonable answer, eg - do you want to live IN it or ON it? ie are you going to use a roof tent or sleep inside?

If roof tent, then my option would be a 130 with a quadtec back body. Loads of storage, all secured in the back body, 300Tdi engine for simplicity and reliability, will also run on cooking oil if you run out of diesel.

If sleeping inside, then Defender Ambulance conversion or 101 as above. All assuming you want a Landy based vehicle. If not, the Unimog is superb if expensive. I believe Japanese 4x4s are very popular in Africa these days, so I'd go with an older model jap - again to keep it simple. If a metal linkage breaks, either you or any local workshop can fix it, if an ECU gets corrupted/drowned/damaged then you're stuck til a new one is shipped in.

The Expedition Portal website is a good starting point, I'm a regular browser myself as I'll be building a camping/overlanding trailer eventually based on a Sankey trailer that I have - it'll go behind the 300Tdi Disco, with the tent on the trailer.
