hi all,
I have a problem, the black surround binnacle frame surrounding the dials and warning lights, three of the four corners fixing lugs seem to have been super glued in a past life, and although still hanging in there, the unit surround needs replacing, ANYONE out there any ideas where I can find a reasonably priced replacement please.

Also a month ago, following recommendation from local garage, due to oil lines showing onto the wheel surface, I had a rear offside wheel oil seal replaced, This lasted 150 miles, but then showed up again, two days later, and 40 miles on, its started showing again, although I was told that the rear drum and pads were unaffected. could it be something else. or what.
regards leemar

Oil leaking is most likely the rubber dust cap on the outside of hub. Get a new genuine cap.

hi harry 2012,

followed up your E-bay lead regarding the replacement binnacle. comes from a 110, with full instruments, including amp dial,
the seller said all four fixing lugs along with everything else was in very good working order, so I have bought the unit.

I think that the only item I need to change will be the mileage dial, mine shows 138,000 miles, against 203,000 miles.

anyone, any tips on changing the complete unit, or is it just making notes , connection to connection.

also I don't have an amp meter in old binnacle, the replacement one douse, where would I find connections to liven up amp meter.

also, I will follow up your suggestion, and check if, and whether rear hub dust cap fitted.

and thanks top driver
for your input, but the above e-bay looked a good buy.

Removed the above rear offside wheel, removed existing dust cap, = looked o/k, but found what looked like parts of a black chewed up rubber band insert where dust cap snaps into position,,, Anyone know what these are called, so I can order replacement along with new dust cap. Please.

is that not part of the cap?

just swap your speedo over. it's very simple, 1 or 2 nuts.

that's a voltmeter, just hook it up to a ign live.. also looks like someone has installed a cig lighter on the top.. probably want to hook that up with its own wire to the fusebox. or leave it disconned for now ;)

hi trax,
I hadn't thought of that trax ( rubber seal may be inc ), ill order one now, and just wait and see.

Also thanks for my awaited binnacle info, I,e. electrics, ill also follow that though as well.

regards leemar

i'm pretty sure it's just a groove in the cap, it could have worn off. can't properly remember tbh. easy enough to check. just whack one of the others off and compare :)

Any oil on the outer-side of the wheel is a leak from the hub cap (most likely) or the hub flange gasket. As had been said before - only buy genuine hub caps!
This diagnosis is true for your axle, but not newer ones ( before someone mentions it! ).

hi trax,
thanks for electrics info, the e-bay binnacle has arrived, looks in very good condition, and im ready to fit it, all looks to be fairly easy if I make note of where existing wire connections go. Im no auto electrician

One bit im a bit nervous about, = after disconnecting battery = connecting amp meter, you mention ignition, would that be to wire feeding back of ignition switch.

Thanks all, for help so far...
And cig lighter point. ( don't smoke, but handy for other items ), you mention fuse board, would that be finding and adding new point to existing cig lighter wiring in fuse board

I can see what connectors I need, Is there any particular wiring size that I need,

Thanks all for help so far...

thanks harry for pointing me to the e-bay binnacle, I bought it, and fitted it yesterday, all seems to work, exept that two very small bulbs needed,

only thing left to do now, wire in the volt meter.
wire in the secondary cig point ( attached ).

im no auto electrician, but anyone out there could give me pointers after disabling battery, I,e. type of cable, and nearest point to connect same items would be appreciated.

regards leemar

voltmeters and ammeters are completely different things. looks like a voltmeter to me.

'ignition live' is a wire that has 12+ when the ignition is on.

do it a bit at a time if you are new. get the speedo working, then the temp gauge.

get your engine to temp and go for a lil drive until it's warm. the gauge and sender need to be matched, so that new one might read well out.

if it does, stick your old one back in (or put it back in anyway)

then do the voltmeter. i can't remember the wiring colours off the top of my head. but it's just a ign live, earth and live for the light. look at the other gauges for the light live and hook into that using bullets and connectors.

also look for the ign live they are using. it's probably the same wire. hook into that the same

have fun :)

hi trax,thanks for reply.
The replacement binnacle came from a 1992 110, everything the same as my 90 binnacle, exept mine had not got volt meter fitted. just a blank fitted.

I have swapped complete unit, including changing speedometers over, because the 110 reading was 203.000 miles against my 90 reading at 137.000 miles.

After the change over, I took vehicle for run, speedo good, fuel gauge good, water temp good, all warning lights good,, exept, got to change two dead bulbs.

NOW as you pointed out, I only have to wire up volt meter. will I have to run wiring thought to battery, or possibly hitch into ignition wiring behind dash.

Secondly, the replacement binnacle has a capped round power point drilled and fitted to top right of binnacle, and needs wiring, could I perhaps run wiring for that, though to existing centre dash cig lighter point. or w.h.y.

P.S, FREE,, FREE anyone out there got a use for a good used defender speedo FREE,,FREE.

hook the gauge into existing dash wiring. i'm surprised your 90 had the same water gauge, doesn't look like my orig 86 one. looks like a later type.

for the cig lighter, you *could* hook it up to the existing cig lighter wiring, however if you used both at once with high draw devices it would kill the fuse. if you fitted a higher fuse, it would kill the orig wiring as it's not rated for that high current.

best way is to run a new rated wire down to the fusebox.

personally, if you have a center one already and you don't think you'd use the dash. i'd take it out and put a blank cap on it.

i'd have the speedo from you, my trip counter bit has broke :>

Hi Trax, have sent you private message regarding speedo,, address please..

on another note, can anyone tell me where to obtain a landrover 90 binnacle gauge dash light holder, one of my light holders was missing when I obtained very good replacement binnacle on e-bay recently.

also, all lights been working fine, but suddenly my fog light has gone . checked bulb, and dash bulb, also the fuses, all good. anyone out there with the font of all knowledge, can you help please.

what im looking for= see above thread= is a bulb holder that just pushes into a hole in the back of any landrover 90 binnacle gauge. has anyone got one knocking about in their box of tricks, or could I get one from a supplier, if so what would be the asking term for the item please.
