I've had a Mk4 Sat Nav since July. Been really happy with it.. much faster, better interface. Brilliant.

Went for a drive on Saturday, and 5 minutes into the journey the screen flickered and went off. In the past (with the Mk3 unit) it had done this before, and seemingly rebooted and come back to life. This was the first time it happened with the Mk4 though.

Instead of coming back on, the screen stayed black, but flickered around the edges (like an old VHS tape) for the rest of the 30-min drive. Then coming home (we took a detour to let the little one get a nap) the screen just stayed entirely blank for over an hour (didn't even flicker like before).

Then the next time I drove it (on Sunday) it seemed to have reverted to an emergency backup state, with no navigation, and a basic-looking interface.

Any idea what may have caused this, or how I get it to recognise the newer interface again?

Cheers.

Sometimes the Mk4 unit can lose its marbles...esp. if you have TMC Traffic, Speed Cameras and Perspective view on...its little RAM can't handle that much info....

MKine did it once, so I turned TMC off as it can't handle trying to process traffic info esp. if there is lots of it in your area!

Research this as it seems common!

Thanks all. I have perspective view on, but not speed cameras or TMC. The trouble is I seem to be stuck with this classic interface and no nav, so I can't change any of these options anyway. I guess I'll pull the Mk4 unit out and see if my inexperienced eyes can spot anything awry. Just wasn't sure if there was anything common (like a fuse, or weak connector) which may cause this behaviour. Does a reversion to this basic interface generally indicate a dead nav unit?

Yep. The clunky font and the fact that the On-Road Nav is not showing up as an option on the main menu suggests a problem with the unit. Given you said this has happened occasionally with your Mk 3 unit makes me think its likely to be water ingress.
The water can drip into the bottom of the unit - causing a problem - then dry out, and you think all is well. If you're feeling brave, open the unit and check the printed circuit board for signs of water damage.

So, a new development.. I finally had a chance to look at this today and I've noticed that there's a small light flashing/flickering in the left-edge of the DVD slot, though the power light is off. Pulling the unit out completely and re-seating all the plugs made no difference, nor did pulling fuse 49 for 10 seconds.

I tried ejecting the disc, only to notice that when I press the eject button, the power light comes on. As soon as I release it, it goes off again. If I hold my finger on the eject button, the unit powers up and the Mk4 nav interface appears on the dash screen. As soon as I release it again, it goes blank and flickers, just like that first journey last Saturday. So there appears to be some loose connection internally.

Now I only bought this in July, obviously used, from eBay. I probably don't have any comeback now after 3 months? I guess that's £220 wasted, unless I can repair it myself.

Any thoughts / suggestions?

Ok, so I pulled it apart, could see nothing wrong, put it all back together ensuring all connectors were seated properly. It's now booted up and remained on for the last 10 mins, but I can't turn on the radio! I'll admit I didn't try to use the radio with Queeg either, but it doesn't seem to work with or without the Sat Nav in place. So I seem to have deeper power issues than I thought? Could this all just be a loose wire somewhere? I'll admit I've dismissed fuses as my old P38 used to tell me if a fuse had blown, so I've assumed the L322 would too?

Edit: Checked fuses 8 & 49, all looks well. At this point I've run out of knowledge, thinking I'll need to take it somewhere and fork out.

Damn, may have spoken too soon. I still had radio & nav this morning, but 5 mins into my journey the screen flickered off, but the radio stayed on. Then 2 mins later, the radio went silent, despite the red led being on. At work, so haven't been back to the car since - will see how it plays tonight.

Does this mean I won't get my kiss....cock tease :D:D:D:D:D

Well the radio still works, even with the nav constantly rebooting, and I can even control it with the steering wheel buttons, so I reckon you've still earned it ;)

I'm back to thinking the mk4 nav unit is at fault here, and all the cocking about with cables and fuses made the radio throw a wobbler.

Maybe I should kiss that £220 goodbye and get another one?? :\

Do you still have your mk3 unit??

Could try that and see if the radio still misbehaves!
