p38 ignition barrel replacement

I understood it was integral to the whole column....when I thought I may need to replace mine I made some enquiries and true to form, it was not as simple as just replacing the barrel the entire steering column had to be replaced at huge expense; luckily for me it was subsequently not necessary but I think you can't just replace the barrel, not officially anyway. Sometimes there are used racks for sale on fleebay but you need to make sure you get both keyfobs with it or there will be a further few hundred quid to shell out. Then you will need diagnostics / Rovacom kit to reset, I think, but there are other forum users who will be along soon who I am sure know more about this. Nothing in a P38 is ever straightforward......

hi

no you can change just the ignition barrel as i phone Land Rover for a price they need your chassis number so the lock can be cut to suit you key, thats if the locks and key have not been changed already, i just need to know how to fit it

i email one of the breakers on flee bay and this is what he said

( what it boils down to is removing the position cable and springs, undoing the bottom part of the barrel, then undoing the retainer screw on the barrel, and it should slide out)

the part i am stuck with is i cant find the retainer screw can anyone shed some light on this

Aye, but they'd cr*p on your seat for good measure!

You should take your motor to Greenbank 4X4. Ask for Colin and tell him Sam Murray sent you. He might give me a discount the next time mine is in for something.

i know the garage well better than id hoped :D it should be a straight forward job to do but the easiest of jobs on a P38 are the hardest, i have a complete steering column with key and ignition barrel i was just wanting to use my original key so i dont have 2 keys for the car but it starting to look as if i will change the complete column instead
