Help guys,when I start up my 1997 P38 range Rover the abs light comes on as it should,goes out after a minute or two,then as I start to drive it comes on and stays on.
I have no other problems with the braking etc.
All suggestions gratefully received.

hi i had same on my 2000 p38a, turned out to be ABS switch fitted to pump, not cheap!! 200 quid + at stealers. it could be accumulator on top of abs pump, the pump itself if brakes aren't too good or sensor or abs ecu!! as you can see it could be a number of things, i bought second hand good pump with accumulator, switch all fitted. i think the way ahead is to get fault code read first.

Get the faults read, the last one I saw with that problem was the ECU.

The ABS light should come when ignition is turned on. Go out after a second or so then come back on. Blink off and on if you will, this indicates the system check is being done. Then not go out again until the vehicle reaches around 7 mph and the signals from the sensors have been checked by the ECU. As Data says time for a fault reading session.

Just from memory (its been a while), at least on Testbook the ABS section fault readouts are not terribly illuminating except if there is actually a sensor fault. May I suggest checking the brakes and lines manually, check calipers and around the abs modulator pump and accumulator etc etc for leaks. Secondly, the ABS sensors can sometimes get jolted, pushing them back in with the back of a screwdriver often does the job. Check the harness multiplugs to the sensors too for a tight fit and give 'em a quick clean with a bit of contact cleaner spray. Personally I think Lizalandy's advice will probably turn out right but there's no harm eliminating the simple stuff first.
