Hi........i bought petrol as i like the drive and sound.....however Range Rover has nothing to prove so i suppose we don't worry how quick off the mark it is as we wouldn't be dragged into such childish behaviour as racing any other brand of 4x4..........
 
Hi all, newbie on here and been lurking a while but was reading this and am wondering where do we stand now with the currently horrendous cost of fuels?

Locally I'm looking at a best of petrol at 127p or diesel at 131 with LPG at 75p.

Being a bit simple I'm struggling to work out whats the best deal economically and by how much. I too am currently looking at a P38 4.0 V8 or 2.5 diesel.

Same here, I wanted the v8 no matter what. As for racing, well wouldnt catch me doing that ( well not with the misses with me :D)
 
i would go for the diesel mine is a 2.5 done 123,000 miles is a manual 95 model,basic as i could get(less to go wrong),i would not be without it,it is ultimately your choice.
 
I suppose to be objective you would need to have owned both, personally I like diesels as in general they just seem more reliable, looking at the posts in the forum the V8 would worry me at higher miles due to the cracked block/pulled liner problem (but would imagine the power would be addictive), there are a lot of starship mileage diesels as you will see in another thread but as I said I just prefer diesels. The electrics though are very dodgy, its makes my Alfa look Germanic in comparison, make sure everything works.

I had an Alfa 166 it was an amazing car, I was driving along and a message popped up on the info displaying aircon fault please drive to your alfa dealer. I looked at the screen and said F*ck Off, then a green gas started to fill the cab, I tried to wind the front windows down but they did not work either, I still remain impressed by that alfa trying to gas me.

I have to agree about the "sensible" bit but its a real pity. I dont wont to be sensible, I want a V8!!! But this is the real world, a world where fuel is going to £1.40 a litre by Easter (if not before), a world where it would be nice to be able to feed my wife and child, a world where at the moment a V8 rebuild would take up too much time and money and a world where LPG is 10 miles to the nearest station!!! So thats why Im looking for a 2.5 DSE (Or DHSE if Im lucky) and poss Powerbox it to get a bit more go out of her)). Its not what I really want but its that or no RR. Maybe v8 next time - hopefully and l322 too!!!
 
In the length of time this thread has been running I sold my 3.9. Classic running on LPG and bought a 2.5 diesel P38.
Used to get about 18mpg on a good run on gas in the classic now get about 36 mpg in the P38. This was fine when LPG was 50p a litre (less than half price of petrol) but now it's 75p compared to £1.30 it's perhaps not so good (don't know what a P38 with a modern LPG system would return my old one was single point).

You have to also add in cost of servicing an LPG system every year or they start to run badly.

As to which is better I did like the sound of the V8 but I would probably stick with diesel now (less to go wrong) but would like a larger lump as the 2.5 is under powered even with the power gizmo box. I certainly wouldn't buy one and convert as it would take too long and too many miles to get money back, just buy a decent one that's already been done.
 
I've owned a P38 2.5TD and now have a L322 4.4 V8 with no LPG.

P38 was 28mpg and a good all round car.

L322 Vogue with petrol is 18mpg, but absolute luxury with bags of power, just as a RR should be. :)

TDV8 is the best option, but too much for me!

We have one here in the company. Awesome car. Amazingly quick for its size / weight. Does about 30 to gallon....just as well as we have clocked up 88000 miles in just over 3 years! Reliable too.. only one minor suspension probs and a battery failure in all that mileage. However when it was parked in a barn recently the rats ate the wiring and random faults started to occur. The bill? A mere SEVEN THOUSAND pound to put it right. Luckily the company insurance paid it (after some heated negotiation) except the vat! Not the cars fault though. I would like to buy it after the company has finished with it but christ knows how many miles it will have by then!!!
