Hi Folks

Hope you can help I have a 2004 l322 which has done 150k and over the weekend the transmission failsafe prog message came on. But there has been no difference in driving goes through all the gears fine. I have plugged it in and the only fault is 'mechanical torque converter monitor fault' does anyone have any pointers.

Thanks

Weird you have no obvious driving issues.

Has the gearbox been serviced at all ? Ie oil and filter changed ?

Hi Gearbox never been serviced. I was planning on getting this done but most folk say if an auto box is working don't touch it.

By all accounts 150k for a box on one of these cars is not too shabby and this would be the first major fault this car has had.

I spoke to a few folk today some said change everything others said change the torque converter and service the box it will be ok but not sure I am a mechanic myself so the labour isn't a problem.

Thanks

Auto box oil & filter needs changing every 30K miles despite LR saying it's sealed for life.
If the torque convertor has failed, it may well have trashed the box.
Certainly if you keep driving it, the box will be knackered.

I would always think it should be serviced. the Auto box in my mitsubishi was due service and mitsubishi themselves refused to do it as it just caused problems.

Judging what the 'experts' say I think the torque converter is on its way out. My dilemma is how far gone is it? and is the box on its way too or am I early enough just to do the torque converter?

Has anyone got away with just doing the torque converter on its on before?

They refuse to do it because there is more money in fitting replacement boxes.
There was a thread a while back where someone got away with just the torque convertor, but at 150K the box must be near the end of it's life especially as it's had no oil changes.

To be fair the mitsubishi is still going strong but japs tend to be a bit like that.

I would agree with you on the gearbox won't have much life left in it most folk can't believe its got this far already. But unfortunately my wallet doesn't agree with that one!

You need Bemble, a genius with auto boxes. He pops up from time to time, he helped Holidaychicken with his box re-build.

I have seen a few of his posts. The only thing I have in my favour is I don't need to worry about labour cost so my just chance a TC on its own

and i was just out of therapy..........

the diesel box is the GM if i'm not mistaken so different issues to mine but if the box is working fine then i wouldnt imagine it has much wrong with it.
i think i would at least change the oil and filter and flush through the oil cooler and pipes as i think the torque converter relies on oil pressure to function.
i would search the net for rrphil or bemble posts as he is the god of all things transmission.

theres a whole load of electronics in the ZF box which bemble very kindly took away including my valve block and tested everything

i changed the oil cooler, filter and pipes when we rebuilt my box along with the TC refurb and a few bearings and clutch plates that were very slightly worn after 110K. i reckon with the gasket set TC and other parts i still spent £600+

if you can get the box out if its like mine its not a major job to disassemble and check and change anything suspicious, but again bemble is your man and being honest i think my rebuild would have been a different story altogether if he wasn't on hand for advice when needed along with my man loony:crazy:, to be fair i just made the tea and emailed bemble a lot

saint has a whole lot of knowledge as well if you search his how to on changing the oil and especially the fence sprayer mod for refilling the fecking box when the engines running. our first attempt with a ****e oil gun left us with greenpeace rescuing oil soaked local wildlife form around my shipwrecked rangey....

thankfully mine has been absolutely perfect for some time now, not even the slightest rumble

Certainly worth dropping the sump and checking for ‘glitter’

which would indicate that the torque converter lock-up clutch has worn through its friction lining

If there’s no metallic debris you might just get away with a TC swap (for now) but, chances are, the valve bodies are worn.

hi Phil, good to see you are still about, i was just guessing stuff to fill in time until you got here, my old girl is still going strong, the transmission is probably the best bit in the car now, not even a hint of a rumble or vibration.
How have you been?

Hi Andy,

Glad to hear that your transmission is still fine and that your TC LUC bedded in okay. Regards to Loony.

I’ve sold my L322 now but I’m still keeping my eye in with the 5HP24s (I have three on the go in my garage at the moment). I’ve also started playing around with the 5HP24A (4WD Audi) models too now – a massive lump at 142kg.

hi Phil, its good news for anyone with a range rover (and audi now) that you are still keeping your eye in, that transmission looks like its out of an air craft carrier !

i'll pass on your best to Jason (loony) he's not been that great recently but he's back on the mend.

Keep watching over the forums for us, i might google all your posts and write a book...

Andy

cheers for the response guys and the help I have stuck the car into an automatic transmission place to get it diagnosed turns out a guy I served my time with is good friends with the guy that owns the transmission place.
