Hello all,

Been hankering after a l322 for a couple of years now, but finally have gathered up some cash to buy one. Budget is 10-12k. What should I be expecting to get for this? Been looking at 03's (td6) with 90+k on the clock. Would these be best avoided and maybe look for something a bit fresher?

I'm not new to land rovers, and I'm not expecting a vehicle that won't have issues from time to time, but will only be weekend/pleasure, not my main drive. Anyway, I am fond of a bit of tinkering as well:), but not major surgery.

Any help or advice will be gratefully received, many thanks

Richard

someone else will be along shortly to give a more in depth post.

but all i can say is that there wicked motors !

cost a hell of a lot to keep working, and the early ones have plenty of issues.

12K should get you at least a 2004/2005.

vogue is the best model with all the extra's.

diesels will be more to buy, but cheaper on fuel obviously.

there's a massive buying checklist on here somewhere that you should study first before buying one so you know what to check upon viewing the car.

like the diesel gearboxes failing at around 90K or earlier.... LOL

once you test drive one, you will want it ! believe me :p

I have a 2002 HSE L322 TD6, and iv done a 2007 facelift and 2011 rear facelift to it... love it to bits :p

GOOD LUCK !

Already want one, defender threw a gearbox last christmas and LR assist gave me a 61 plate vogue tdv8 for 2 whole weeks while they fixed it, had 50 miles on it when I got it. Never as sad to see a defender come back in all my life.

oh right, you already have the taste for them ! LOL :p

and you had the TDV8 ?

thats a wicked engine from what i hear...

thats what im aiming for next after my TD6.

have you taken a td6 for a test drive yet ? otherwise i think you will find the TD6 sluggish in comparison to the V8 you tested.

but once the td6 has been re-mapped or chipped, they do fly :p

to be honest mate, if you can find another 4-5K to the budget you will get at least a 2006 TDv8 facelift which in my opinion will be less trouble then an early model will be

The early Diesels had the GM box which was prone to Torque Convertor issues...

Basically, the aluminium they used on the valve blocks wears at an alarming rate, and this leads to lower hydraulic pressure across the TQ Solenoid Modulating Valve causing the TQ to start to slip, this wears the friction material away and gets into the oil with abrades the valve block some more and a cycle begins to the point that the TQ breaks down and trashes the whole box....

90k on an original box is on borrowed time IMHO

BUT

They are simply awesome vehicles, I have spent quite a bit already on mine in 7 months....and I am looking down a long tunnel and at the end is most likely a Gearbox rebuild for me, but inspite of this I wouldn't have anything else.

Vogue for top spec, but there are HSE's out there with kit on (Like Hippo's).

The TD6 is a great motor, just mated to a naff box, although they can be prone to blowing the Turbo pipes off every now and then, leading to a severe lack of power at the most inoportune moments.

Like all cars get one with history, take it for a loooooooong drive and test everything....twice - no scratch that - 18 times!!

Pre 2005 and you can get hold of the All Comms Diagnostic kit for a couple of hundred.....later models are faultmate/hawkeye only I believe.

They have their issues:

Leaky Rear Quarters trashing the Electronics Bay
Sticky EAS Valves
Weak Gearboxes and Torque Convertors
Rear Suspension Bushes wear rapidly
Electrical Niggles

But I can assure you, if you get one, you won't regret it....your bank balance might....but trust me they are grand to drive....

if your budget it 10-12K - buy one at 1500-2000 less and keep that to one side for a potential Box rebuild if the 90k is on the one box!

It is definately a wicked engine, goes like stink, and 23mpg when you rag the life out of it, 25 if your half sensible. No worse than a defender.

Haven't driven a TD6, had a spin in a 03 V8.

Knew about that one, 03 one I know was running the battery down overnight, started looking into it, electronic box in back tied up in a landrover bag, seems that was a dealer repair!

I do have a jetta which is worth somewhere in the 6-7k mark, add that to the budget and might be able to stretch to an 06, and potentially avoid some of he g/b issues, but really hadn't intended spending that much

Yep Official LR Repair was to cover the gear in a branded plastic bag!!

Don't over stretch the budget...keep some aside for potential repairs....

Now the 2013 L405 is on the scene S/H prices of mid to late decade TDV8's may come into your price range shortly....if your not in a hurry for one, wait till the warmer months...>Range Rovers (and 4x4's in general) have a Winter Premium at the moment

If you expect a TD6 to perform well after driving a V8 then you'll be permanently driving in sport mode.

Thing with a 322 is when it starts to go wrong that's the time to sell it. Don't get attached to them.

I've waited this long so I suppose I'm in no rush, but when you get into tdv8's the price goes up, very quickly.

Got a lovely 2012 hard top 90 parked outside tonight, grand total of 750 miles in the clock :), getting the last of the warranty repairs done on my own, let the bills begin.

I would agree with what saint V8 and Hippo have said! In my relatively short ownership experience I have had to have the gearbox and torque converter reconditioned- which I had budgeted for (mine went at 94k at it's a 02' td6). Other than that i have had a sticky injector issue and the turbo to intercooler pipe likes to blow off occassionally!
I would always advise to have £2k in the pot for potential repairs- for common issues such as air suspension struts, g-box issues, electronic gremlins etc!
BUT- I absolutely love mine- I have kept my defender for my 'no frills' motoring though!

They can be good and on the other hand can be bad.

The td6 is quite common with injector problems.
Also seen a few with faulty fuel pressure regulators (same set up on td4, same part infact)

Rear rose joint bushes are common and cause an irritating knock.
But that's just wear and tear.
Also
Mentioned the earlier ones suffer with bad torque converters.

And last but not least the annoying internal door release cable is quite prone to snap !

Been for a real good hunt around, best tdv8 I can find is 18.5k, with about 90k on it,

Just a little over budget, but for that you could get a 05 td6 with about 50k, is the v8 that much better?

Fault free for how long ? Lol

+1 on that.

There's no such thin as a fault free L322, my drivers door handle cable has just snapped, so now I'm havin to open the door from the back seat!! Pain in the ass, but gettin it sorted Friday.....

Then happy motoring...till the next problem!! LOL
