Hi Everyone
Had to take the battery off the Rangey for a while. Put battery back on and the keys won't reset...engine immobilsied.
Have found the fault I think. Whilst trying to reset the code I could see through the window the bonnet open warning come on. I would guess this is why it won't reset.
Thing is where is the sensor and has anyone any idea how to fix it please? I have tested the bonnet and re-shut it several times and it is firmly shut. I have had to disconnect the battery again as the alarm keeps going off every half hour or so.
Rangey is a 1996 Diesel 2.5 BMW auto.
Cheers

No-one any ideas?
Looks like another week of public transport:(

I am getting to the stage of selling this vehicle and going back to a Volvo V70R. Always wanted a Rangey but realise now it was a BIG mistake. This is the most trouble I have ever had in 35 years plus of motoring...and I bought it with full dealer service history but privately so no warranty!!!!!

Also the main agents are very expensive. When you are a full time carer for a disabled wife and live on crap money, every penny counts.
I spoke to the the main Rangey dealer and the Volvo dealer who are just doors apart and described this fault to them. The Rangey quote for tow in and initial fault finding was three times more expensive than Volvo!!!!

Oh well, we all make mistakes.

This can be a common problem, usually its because the bonnet hasn't latched fully but you say you have checked this.

In this case the catch might need to be adjusted, open the bonnet and the catch closest to the battery is the one with the sensor on it. Check its properly secured to the chassis and make sure its properly lubricated.

If this doesn't fix it and you just want to shut it up until you have more time to sort it out then remove the cover that goes over the battery, snake your hand to underneath the catch and disconnect the multi-plug thats part of the catch. This will trick the BeCM into thinking the bonnet is closed.

This should only be a temporary measure and you should really spend a few mins trying to figure out the problem, its only a catch and probably just needs adjusting a little.

Lastly, download a copy of RAVE.

Post back with whether this gets the vehicle going again...

Now up for sale. No-one seems to be able to sort out the key code lock so I have started by putting it on this group in the Range Rover for sale section. If no takers then it goes on eBay. I absolutely refuse to pay a Land Rover garage £400 to tow it in and report on the fault. They think it may be the door lock not reading properly. I need a working car so I am going back to a V70R Volvo.
Cheers, Bob

your going to lose money imo, i would ring a local car delivery/recovery firm and have it taken to your nearest local specialist. Sort it then sell it. Probs have it done and dusted for 200 or less including transport.

i agree - or phone a local independant landrover garage / technician and get them to do the work

its only costing so much due to the main dealers

- and i wouldnt have thought a V70r is a cheaper beast to get fixed - and not easy to find either - and its still a volvo estate whatever badge they stick on it:)

Thanks for that:)
Sadly my local land Rover is about 15 miles away and they have quoted £400 to pick up and check it out!!!!!

(There is no-one else local who can fix it and I have tried 11 local garages...they all say go to Land Rover we don't ever touch Range Rovers 'cos they are rubbish!!!)

Land Rover say it is something to do with the door lock not reading the sensors or something like that which would mean a new door lock assembly. That they can do for a further £385. I can get the parts for under £30 from the local breaker but I can't do the work.

So sadly it goes. What it makes is what it makes.

Being a full time carer for a disabled wife I simply don't have that kind of money to throw at it....£800 is what I get to live on for 3 months!!!!:(

Shame really because someone who knows what they are doing could make a good mark up.

I just want the thing out of my sight...I have never had any trouble from Volvos (8 in 17 years, all species from 850 to V70R) in the past and this thing is just a nightmare. I should have listened to all the people who told me not to touch one with a barge poll.

I HATE IT:mad: I just want it gone:mad:  So come on guys, if you want to make some money, make me an offer ;)

Cheers

a bit off topic but you say you only get £800 for 3 months as a carer?get that sorted out,i care for my wife and with high rate d.l.a. and high rate carers allowance plus income support i get £510 a week!

have you looked for mobile auto electricians, most garages will call one in anyway when you take it there.

A friend of mine is a Volvo race mechanic and even he won't look at the Range Rover!!!!....the last V70R I had was 420BHP. It may be just an estate but they don't half go:D The standard is 285bhp, or 325bhp if you have the Rica chip fitted. And they hold the road like excretia to blanket!!!!

I have now found the fault and all those interested should have grabbed it while the going was good. It was the bonnet latch after all. The internals of the switch although clicking were not working, but Wills' idea of removing it did not let the system ignore it. If you remove alarm sensors the system reads them as malfunctioning and therefore the alarm / key code will not re-set.
However a new part is being sought and then it goes back on the market for its true value or I may trade it in for a Volvo V70R...either way it goes and a V70R arrives..
