You get what you pay for.

If you want a winch to get you out of the schtuck occasionally, a sub £300 will be fine.

If you want to use it for hardcore offroad, recovering yourself multiple times eveyr trip out, you'd find it wont last that long.

On the cheaper winces, they seem to have smaller motors geared down more, so they are slower, but will pull the required load.

Synthetic is worth it all day long, safer, easier & easier to handle, have a look on youtube for comparisons of snapping steel or synthetic. or look for an empty winch and get your synthetic rope elswhere.

I have a Superwinch Husky 8 on mine. Very good winch, just a bit slow.

But that's a £900 or so winch new, as has been said you get what you pay for.
