My P38 came with Pirelli Scorpions, the exact markings are:

Pirelli 255/55 R 18 109 H M+S

The Range Rover is a 2000 (X) Vogue 4.6

Can anyone tell me what the M+S refers to? I've looked on the Pirelli website and can't find this exact tyre, can anyone shed some light on these, are they a winter tyre or do they have a specific function/loading?

I'm looking to replace two of my tyres, any suggestions or recommends where to get them in the swindon area?

answers in red.

have you tried the usual likes of camskill, black circles, 4x4at.com for tyres/prices?

Is there anything more on the tyre? ATR/All Terrain? last time I looked (quite a while ago) there were at least 3 different types of scorpion tyre available

After 4 years of Pirelli Scorpion S/T's and STR's, I've recently put on a full set of Toyo Open Country A/T. I'm well happy with them. No tramlining, good grip and they're supposed to have very good wear characteristics.

I was generally happy with the Scorpion S/T's but wear wasn't great. The STR's were terrible though, no noticeable improvement over the S/T's in any characteristic and they tramlined terribly. S/T's are getting impossible to get so thats what prompted my switch.

I hope the Toyos will at least match the S/T's for wear and since they are cheaper then I'll be up all round.

DOH! Makes perfect sense.......

Had a feeling that they weren't normal road tyres...

Cheers

They are a normal road tyre. The mud and snow marking means they have some capability in mud and snow, whilst not being an out and out off road tyre. Most tyres for 4x4s will give you some off road capability. The scorpion is one of those that is mainly for road use but will get you through some light snow and mud.

I run general grabber uhp's which are a really good road tyre but coped easily with the snow we got last winter. But when I venture to Norway in the winter months I swap them for some vredesteins which I have on some cheap wheels. They are a proper snow tyre that do all right on the road but wear out rather quickly if used on tarmaced roads.

Slightly hi-jacking this post but I also need two new tyres. Had a look at the Grabber UHPs ( whats UHP?) but need 255/50/20s and they dont do that size. Any other recomendation? I don't mind paying if they're good in the wet and snow which are my priorities.
Cheers,
S

Now been looking at Verdestein Wintrac 4xtreme tyremen are doing them for £189.
I think I might end up buying 4 more wheels and changing summer/winter tyres over.
Do most people do this considering the amount of snow over winter we get?

S

Really depends on where you live, Mid/North Scotland theres probably a few Down Sarf I doubt it. Although this may change in years to come if the weather Down Sarf stays the same over the next few years.

Shinner, where you located???

Depends how deep your pockets are!! I only put my winter tyres on when I venture to Northern winter climates and in that environment the Verdesteins are exellent, even taken me up as far as the artic circle before. But to use them for our mainly mild winters you would go through them in quick time. They have a much softer tread and on clear roads with no snow the temp gets too high and the tread wears very quickly.

Also from memory camskill do them for about £130 last time I looked. They come up on ebay once in a while and if you just use them for the snow it doesn't matter if they've been round the block a few times, its a cheap way of getting some winter tyres.

Just a little hijack while we're on the subject of Scorpions,

I was moving stuff around in my garage at the weekend and rediscovered a slightly more than part worn 18 inch Scorpion ST.

Free to anyone that could use it.

Hi

New to the forum and P38's but not Land Rovers. This forum always seem to come top in any google search, hence joining.

I currently have a P38 with Scorpion S/T's on 18 inch wheels, which are due to be replaced.

I am looking for a good winter tyre, so am I best looking at an 18 inch tyre, or look at a 16 inch wheel and tyre combination?

I live very rural, so would need something with a pretty aggressive tread for the snow.

Thanks

Just had a look camskill do them for £185.50

Not certain if M&S tyres are classed as winter or all season. I tend to think the latter. As someone said earlier, all it denotes is some off-road ability in the mushy stuff. Nothing about handling icy conditions which is more the case with winter driving on the road. In Germany the law requires you to have proper winter tyres "when conditions warrant" and all-seasons don't cut it with plod if you're unlucky enough to prang someone.

Vredestiens are good indeed. Nokian maybe even better but are pricey.

@Bolloti - the difference in real life will be small but if you have a choice go for the 16"s mate. Even when fitted as standard the 18" was just to help visually differentiate higher trim level cars and therefore more motivated by appearance than performance.

Mebbe, but 18s look nicer!

Bolloti, I moved from S/Ts to General Grabber AT2s and good as the STs were, the GGs were in a different league in terms of off road performance. They're pretty good on road too. Unfortunately the AT2s have been replaced by ATs which don't look as aggressive but are apparently even better.

They were excellent in the snow last year - I went green (white) laning in the deep snow on mine with no problems at all. They're nothing special on ice though as I discovered, but then again most tyres aren't.

Thanks for the replies, I am erring towards buying some second hand 16" wheels for the winter and saving up for some new quality boots for the summer.
