Hello All,

Just before I spend an absolute fortune in both time and readies.....

....Has anyone got actual facts on how much power a S3 gearbox can handle?

I heard a lot of people say "not much more than standard 2.25" but then again reality is that there are much evidence to suggest that this is also a right load of tosh (numder of TDI conversions and V8 conversions). So if you've done a converstion can you let me know how much:

POWER

TORQUE

HOW LONG HAS IT SURVIVED

Thanks

Max

it could handle being attached to a 1500 BHP beast as long as you drive it sensibly

you might as well ask how long does snow take to melt

Nice one!, nothing like stating the obvious....

Was looking for somebody who has done a conversion, lived with it, so a typical responce might look like:

"I've had a 200 Tdi COnversion in mine for about 2 years now its make around 100Bhp and same torque, I used in mainly on raod and had no problems"

Thanks

if you did get a reply such as what your wanting to get you'll best be asking them to describe in detail what their driving style is like as well, and what their maintenance schedule is, what oils they use, how many miles they drive

V8 on Series box for 5 years
150bhp(ish)
**** loads of torque
serious abuse offroad
so far so good

just don't ask how many diffs and halfshafts I've destroyed!

same here series 2 half syncro 3.9 v8 **** loads a every thing ...and it apears the diffs dont last aslong as the boxses ....

200tdi kicks out 112bhp......and as everyone above says you'll bust everything but the box if you boot that much through.

Been driving 200di's in a series 3 swb and a 2a lwb for 3 years or so.....my only vehicles so they get used for everything from motorway runs to regular dragging timber round the woods, often towing a sankey with excess of a ton so nearing 2 tons in total and I work the engines hard.......without the turbo the 200s kick out around 80bhp and I've had no problems from any of the drive train.

Experience of friends with tdi's suggest the halfshafts are the weak link and UJ's become disposable....both are fairly simple to upgrade but then the diff becomes the fall guy....getting expensive.

The old boys'll tell you the old series 2 semi-crash boxes are stronger than series 3 but dont know of anyone busting one with torque....at least no-one who bungs a bit of oil in every now and then.....

Hope thats of some help....some of it might even be true!
