Vibrating Land Rover from 50mph up

Good evening all,

constantly use this forum and find what I need however I can’t find a solve for the issue I’m currently having.

I have a 2008 freelander 2 for reference.

I noticed I had a faint vibrating from the car when I would go above 40/50mph and would get worse until about 60/70/80 and then just stay constant vibrating. When I cruise on the motorway at 70 it calms down and stays steady but is still noticeable. It seem to be vibrating on the steering wheel and through the car Itself. It also gets very noisy when I go up in speed.

I therefore had all 4 wheels replaced and then balance as standard from the garage. But this doesn’t seem to have solved it and it’s getting worse.

has anyone got any ideas on fixing ?

Has the propshaft centre support bearing been checked?
Have the front drive shaft inboard CV joints been checked for wear?
Is the rear diff in need of a rebuild?
The car shouldn't vibrate at all, so something isn't right.
 
+1 on prop shaft support bearing as a first check

If it was a series then I'd say it was the overspeed alert :oops: before boss started falling off like a space ship burning up on re-entry
 
i'd add ..
double check the wheel nuts torque, when tyres are cold.
just to rule that out.
 
I'd say its something that turns when the car moves.

I know, eureka moment, but no need to thank me.

I would suggest having changed the wheels, to try changing the tyres. :rolleyes: Jeez, I hope no one from outside the Freelander forum saw that.

My first thoughts were driveshafts, or the CVs on them, but if its got very noisy, then I'd say its unlikely to be that or else it would have taken something out - ie the diff.

The prop support bearings do sound like the prime culprit. I think with the F2, you can't buy just the supports, you have to buy a complete prop assembly. If it was an F1, I'd say remove the props and drive it to see if the problems go. Someone with more F2 experience might be able to say if this is an option, or whether the Haldex might fall off or summat.

Not sure if the prop supports would cause so much vibration though, especially if its noticable more through the steering wheel, this would point to something up front such as a/the drive shafts. Unless they are completely shagged, how long have you had the problems and which came first the noise of vibration?

it started around 1 month ago at the same time but has increased in both noise and vibration over time.
 
Propshaft and drive shafts are prime culprits for vibration, with the rear diff, PTU and gearbox in that order are all known to make noise as they begin to fail.
 
Is the vibration proportional to engine revs or vehicle speed? You say it settles down at 70mph. If you accellerate in 5th, does it come back until you take yer foot oft the pedal?
 
Mines started to do the same thing,(2007 FL2 TD4) vibration between 40 & 50mph (but not all the time) you can feel it through the steering wheel and both front seats. I swapped the front wheels over for the backs then took it for a test and it didn't do it, so i thought it was sorted (bad tyres or those stupid side weights) but next time i drove it, it was back, like i say some times it doesn't do it. Im thinking maybe front drive shaft/s or maybe engine mount? Anyhoo, it can wait for now as I've got a heater matrix to sort in my Transit :oops:
 
I had a vibration in a car immediately after getting new tyres. It took 5 returns to 3 different quik fits to fix the issue.
Turns out they often set the tyre balancer to balance using weights on the inside of the wheel only.
Who'd have thought this might not work. 🤔

They do it cause they're too lazy to use stick on weights on the outside of alloys and can use hammer on weights on the inside.

Now I always watch when getting tyres balanced and insist they do it right.
