Hi There,
I Recently had 2 new vcu/prop shaft bearings fitted to my 2004 freelander
on inspecting them I noticed that the four large metal washers/seals that had come with the new bearings are not fittet . Should this be a problem
Many Thanks.

These are, as I understand it, sh1t shields which should help to prolong the bearing life especially if you're going off road.

You understand correctly Nick. 'Schmutz-fangers' in another language.

Technically I think they are called 'Slingers' and should be fitted with the cups facing away from the bearings so as to throw water, mud and/or other stuff away from the bearing.

They probably do have some beneficial effect as the exposed bearings, especially the front one which apparently usually fails first, get all sorts of rubbish thrown up on to them.

If I was the OP I'd be wanting them fitted properly - they didn't put them in the box for fun - did they?

Singvogel.
