So renewing the 2 swivel balls. Fairlystraight forward procedure and found that the CV joint / UJ is gubbed. I was going to order new joints but I have just remebered that I have spare UJ in the box. Are propshaft UJ's same size as that of the axle? or is it just wishful thinking?
 
What top drive says is correct, if you drive a series landy on a hard surface in 4 wheel drive[not early series one they are different] and turn to full lock you will feel the binding efect of the UJs being transmited back to the steering wheel as a wobble on it.This is why on the road they are driven in 2 wheel drive[and to prevent transmtion wind up]Off road you will not feel it because the wheels can slip a little.Only permenent 4 wheeldrive landys have CVs, thats constant velocity so you can have 4wheel drive on the road.
 
Aye and also free wheeling hubs to take load of the drive shafts when on load.
But yeah they are UJs located inside the swivel. Figured if a I reffered to them as Ujs / cv you would know what i'm on about. Packed with loads of grease, makes it a right messy job. Needing new oil rags. Not sure how the balls would get lubricated. Doesn't matter got some someshot.
Bringing halfshafts to work to get te bearings pressed out, and if lucky the spares will fit & go straight in.:D
 
Not sure if i'm correct, but to my knowledge..there is a difference between a UJ (universal joint) & a CV-J (Constant Velocity Joint).

UJ's allow power to be transmitted at an angle - hence used on prop shafts etc, to account for different angle of axle to that of gearbox / powerout put. So do CV joints. However, a constant velocity joint is just as it says - constant velocity -i.e. the speed of rotation in the shaft / joint remans constant and no speed is lost through rotation, in a universal joint, there is a big drop in rotational speed - hence not overlly efficient for steering. CV joints usually have bearings in - on modern cars that's why you have cv boots which are rubber boots that stop water from getting into the joint and rusting the bearings. On universal joints its far more agricultural ;)

Not sure i'm right..basically they do the same job, but CV joints are far more efficient, but not so 'basic'.
 
The only series with a CV joint is the 109 V8. They put them in the front hubs 'cos the gearbox has a centre diff and its in permanent fwd.
 
So that's why a Series turning circle is restricted.
I don't understand why a UJ could reduce the speed of rotation:confused:. not that its important.

Ok, my spare UJ appears to be correct diameter, but the legth of joint overall is to long. Thanks Oxides, thta means it is probably the correct spare for prop shaft.

Will let you know when that needs doing LOL
 
When a shaft with UJ is rotating at an angle it not only reduces speed but at other points on its 360 degres rotation it increases speed. In other words the rotation is not constant.Its the geometary of the joint that does this, but put two UJs next to each other[double carden joint]and the effect is canceled out.Cheers.
