Hi, a new boy!!
I've just gone up to a Defender, see the intruduction forum, and am a bit at sea with the turbo. There is a dump/gate valve on it which does not open with the engine at speed, the mechanical side is free but the blower pressure does not seem to be high enough to push hard enough on the diaphragm to overcome the spring pressure. The mechanism works with compressed air at about 9/10 psi, what should the turbo push out pressurewise? Can someone help me please?

Your turbo should be kicking out between 12 and 15 psi. If it is not, then I would suggest taking it to a specialist for testing....or swapping it for a reconditioned unit.

Thanks very much for your reply, I'll have a go at checking this weekend, if not, as you say "hit the wallet"! Thanks again 80

Hi again it's the new boy!
Although in general Landies do not pose an engineering problem for me, can someone tell me how take-apart-able is the Turbo fitted to my engine, it's not producing much pressure at all, even at high engine revs, any ideas please, there is no vibration, it does go round and pump air but never more than 1lb/in². HELP......PLEASE.....

There is nothing about taking it apart in either the Haynes "book of lies" or the defender workshop manual.
Having looked at my own turbocharger, I do not think they are a very serviceable item (to the average home mechanice anyway).

Perhaps a specialist company could take a look at it for you.

FYI: A new one, is about £350.

P.S - I guess you have checked all of the tube connections to the unit. If not, take each one off, and check for blockages and\or splits.

Thanks all of you, I spent a lot of time thinking and looking to no avail, I was just ready to shell out for someone to have a gander at it when in the crud under the elbow at the bottom of the steel pipe to the intercooler, I saw a split wonderfully disguised as a thick greasy spot! Replaced and WOW what a difference it makes no more up hill chugging, almost difficult to keep it in rein!!!

May be some silicone hoses would be worth fitting as the standard hoses do tend to go weak and split every now and then

also it may be an idea to attach a turbo boost presure guage and see what presure you are getting from the turbo 13 psi in a td and tdi engine 15 psi on a td5

No you can get 18 psi on a 300 tdi without blowing head gaskets, landrover suggest 12 to 15 psi,i have silicone hose good buy less flex and expanding so more boost pressure not lost in weak hoses, tiga

As you said you are correct but i was stating the standard presures not tuned presures

I have fitted a DTS Enhanced Turbo to my 1995 300TDi after the orig turbo swallowed a small part of an exhaust valve. Its a water cooled Mitsubishi TDO4 and the kit goes for around AUS $2000, same cost as the OEM, which inc the centre manifold . Puts out 101 Kw and 335 Nm torque. Respose from 80 kmh significantly better. Runs at 15psi.

At hwy speed ok, back off to turn off the hwy and the inner skin is sucked off the pipe and acts like an exhaust brake. It will shut the engine down, coast to a stop and she may restart and run till the next back off.....or not Fit silicone hoses.
