Hi all,new to the site and was wondering if anyone can advise me on the subject of conversion to 2WD on my Freelander. I see that you can remove the output shaft from the IRD and replace with a blanking plate but I'm wondering if it's worth doing as i only look towards the 2wd option as a temp solution until I replace the VCU prior to the arrival of winter. the question is?? will the M.O.T station issue a fail against the vehicle given the prop and VCU are removed but the output shaft still in situ. Any help would be greatly apprieciated.

thanks

Welcome.

Don't know about MOT.

If you take off the prop you don't need the blanking plate. Just leave the pinion gear fitted in the IRD. It's easier to remove both props and the VCU as one piece. Support as you undo the bolts. Weight is 25kg in total.

Hi Hippo, many thanks for your reply, already removed the entire prop assembly inc VCU, I'm just a little unsure regarding the need for a blanking plate unless of course the IRD output shaft / pinion is damaged, If the insurers are happy with the conversion surely VOSA would be as well.

Thanks D

Can't see that you would have a problem as the diff flange is still there and turning so why not the IRD flange. If you're thinking that it may be a risk to the public (similar to exposed sharp edges) why would they be under the car if it was moving ?

it will make the steering extremely light, you'll wheel spin if you set off quick and the fuel saving will be marginal.

i dint like it when i had to run in front wheel drive while mine was being repaired IMHO

Hi

Mine's in 'mondo' mode while I wait to convert back, it drives fine, more responsive, no loss in road grip noticeable either. MOT adds an advisory that it's running in 2wd, told insurance and they were fine :)

Hi all, many thanks for the replies, and to Crockett regarding MOT status, so just a few other jobs now to sort on her and i'll try her in.:)
