Hi.... I have a 2004 TD5 Discovery. I bought it last year from the dealer in Chesterfield. It had 33,000 miles, was a one owner machine and had a full service history. Over the last 15 months that I've owned it I've done around 12000 miles. It's been fairly well behaved, other than a leaky air suspension hose. However, I do find that I've had to top up the engine oil with about 1 litre every 3000 miles ish.

I don't drive it hard, usually maximum speed of 55 mph going to and from work, and 70 mph on the occasional motorway trip. Does this level of oil consumption seem reasonable?? I don't have any oil leaks (no oil marks on my driveway) and the engine doesn't smoke.

Appreciate any feed-back......

Cheers,,,, Brian

I have a 99 Disco auto. Last time it was serviced was april, and done around 6000miles. On the dipstick, she hasnt used any, and never topped it up. Its done 99000 in total.

Im a bit stumped with your consumption. Sorry

Yes, seems high. My td5 is 6 years and 137000 miles old. I have had it from new, and the oil consumption is usually less than a litre between 12k services. I have noticed that it drinks more oil on certain oils than others. Using Castrol semi-synthetic diesel-specific oil just now and it's using less than on a thinner fully-synthetic.

Do you have a leak? Does it smoke a lot from the exhaust?

use fully synthetic in my td5 and it dont use any oil at least not in the 2500 miles since i changed it if its not leaking then it must be burning and you should see some signs of it smoke on first start up maby

Thanks for the feed-back. It definately isn't smoking, and it isn't dripping oil onto the driveway. I did have a look underneath last week-end, though not a close look and I did notice some signs of wet oil, but since there's nothing on the floor where I park, I assumed it not to be significant. However, I'll have another look this week-end.

Thanks all!

Brian

If there's a leak while driving you will probably see oil spots on the back door and rear screen. If it's all blowing away it may not drip on the drive. My 1999 TD5 has never used oil, apart from a short period when the rocker cover (or whatever it's called on this engine) gasket leaked. That said, some engines do use oil, and some don't. That's why you're suposed to check it, I spose.

Hello Brian, I'm not a TD5 fan but I'll do my best.
Are most of your journeys short, less than ten miles??
What oil are you using?
1 litre every 3000 miles ish!!!!!!!
I don't care what the book says, my 300TDi never get's to 3000 miles between oil changes.
My advice......give it a damn good thrash for a few hundred miles, drive the bollox of of it, Change the oil and filter, use good semi synthetic and keep on changing the oil every 3000 miles ish.

Rob

Hi Rob

Yeah,, my trip to work is exactly 10 miles. It takes 5 miles just to get warm air from the heater. I use Castrol fully synthetic. Just bought an oil recommended for diesel engines at Halfords. Need to buy in bulk from an Agric dealer.

I did a trip to Bordeaux, pulling a 6.5 metre RIB behind me. I had a full boot and 4 adults. I did a steady 70 mph wherver possible and I had it serviced before I went. Didn't quite use 1 litre of oil in 2500 mile trip. I was really pleased with it's towing performance.

Cheers,,, Brian

Good suggestion... I didn't get underneath today to have a good look. Weather's been awful. I'm not getting any oil on the rear window???

Looks like it just likes a bit of oil now and again.....

Thanks,,, Brian

I took it to Bordeaux last summer. Towed a 6.5 m RIB for 2500 miles. Had a fair thrashing, doing most of the toll roads at 70. It performed really well, but hasn't really changed the oil useage. I had it serviced just before I went. Good suggestion for the 3000 m oil change.

Thanks,,,, Brian

I tow a big tin shed in my Disco td5 on a regular baisis an it never uses nowt but doozul,,, sounds like yours is burning it somewhere,,,
