after doing the first oil change on the td4 I noticed there is no undertray.

I'm not sure how quick I can get one.

how vital is it?

Mine is missing too! Not many to buy on ebay either.
I suppose only really important if you venture off road, but if it should be there.............Probably a lazy service type person left it off, as I shouldn't think they just fall off

The later facelift model has the front plastic valance fastened to the undertray frame work and just flops about if the frame/tray is left off, not sure about the earlier model.

Just had a climb underneath and there seem to be 4 parts to the protection. On mine, the two black plastic side guards are in place and nice and tight, with the front valance held to the frame with electical wire!!! But at least it has been threaded through the fixing holes firmly and is very secure.
Looks like a visit to the breakers yard beckons....Anyone know if the petrol and diesel undertrays are the same?

Sorry can't help with petrol/diesel but the tray comes complete with the frame, the tray is held in position with large headed pop rivets and the front rivets can't be removed unless you drop the frame (unless you butcher it). Some people have made up their own tray from aluminium and left a suitable hole for the sump drain plug, fixing the new tray to the original frame, if you choose this route just do a search on the forum where members have posted how they did it.

The pre facelift/ facelift are different. No difference between petrol and diesel. I fitted 1 from a diesel to my petrol. Hope this helps.

not essential but does save the engine bay filling with crap when laning and offers a little protection for the sump against the ruts due to low ground clearance.

You can fit the early (cheaper) one to the facelift cars, you just have to drill and tap some holes to bolt the valance onto the tray. The only other difference is that the facelift ones have little plastic wings on that look like the will drop off at the fist hint of a green lane.
