Been having a few starting issues recently more so when warm but even first start in the mornings is getting harder. If the glow plug light lights up it starts first turn of the key if it doesn't light up can take a couple of minutes to get it started with white diesel smelling smoke.Once started it run great pulls well no smoke . After the first start it will never start first turn of the key but stutters and stalls second key turn and it fires straight up. It has no fault codes so thought i'd do a leak off test (see attached picture) Now my question to you knowledgeable members is .......... do injectors one and four need replacing

To my untrained eye, I would be concerned about 1 and 4, but without an actual volume of diesel over a set period of time it's hard to say. Did you measure the Millilitres and time taken?
As for starting, that could be, a dodgy O' ring in the high pressure fuel pump. A dodgy cam position sensor, or a problem with the glow plugs- have they ever been changed?
Mike

Hi Mike no i didn't measure the volume but it was over a two minute time period including filling the pipes before it got to the bottle, i changed the 'O' a awhile ago hoping it would help the starting issue but it didn't, as for glow plugs i've not changed them since owning the freelander will have to look back through the service history prior to my ownership , have read about the cam sensor might try freezing it and see if that helps

If that is all the injectors bleed back in a couple of minutes (idling I assume?). Then I wouldn't say there's much of a problem with the injectors yet. Sure 1 and 4 are bleeding slightly more, than 2 and 3. But over the time you did the test for, the amount is small.
Have you looked at the live data? Are there any codes stored?
Sluggish starting can be a few things. If you have done the O ring, have you checked out the rail sensor and it's harness?
Definitely worth testing the glow plugs too. They are used after staring, even if they aren't needed for the actual start.

i replaced a couple of my injectors recently as they filled the bottles in less than 30secs. the replacements were second hand and would probably fill over the bottle in 2 mins but the engine starts easily (without glow plug light and only 2 good glow plugs) and runs sweet as a nut, so i doubt if its the injectors that are at fault. Hope this helps

thanks for the responses I've run a diagnostics again and will post the results from the live data later when I can get my pc working

diagnostic live data results using Icarsoft LR II
idle speed .......................... 780rpm
coolant temperature .......... 78.65 c
inlet air temperature ........... 40.15 c
air flow ................................ 465 mg/stroke
low pressure pump ............. idle 365 ....... 2000rpm 345
high pressure pump ............ idle 28658 ....2000rpm 79234 (average) but fluctuated between 54000 and 88000
manifold pressure ............... idle 100.5 .... 2000rpm 101.7
pressure regulator current .. idle 0.72.... 2000rpm 1.04
pedal 2 demand 0.37%
sensor supply 1 ..... 5.01v
sensor supply 2 ..... 5.01v
battery voltage 14.54 v
capacitor 1 ..... 78.65
air from MAF ...... 13.97 g/s

and a new error code that appeared after 15 minutes of running .... P1110 boost air temp sensor

hope this will help you to help me solve my problems

Your boosted air temperature seems high.
The low pressure fuel pump pressure is a little on the low side. It should hold above 350Kpa at full power. Yours is showing 345Kpa, off load at 2K Rpm.

Have you used a decent fuel injector cleaner?

thanks nodge, would a failing low pressure pump cause the fluctuation with the high pressure pump on the live data ? Any idea what could cause the high boosted air temp ? It was a hot sunny afternoon when I did the diagnostic. I've used b3c's diesel mechanic in a bottle which definitely made it run smoother with better mpg but no improvement on the starting issue is there a cleaner you or anyone else would recommend?
I had a look back through the service history and found no record of the glow plugs ever being changed so have put that on my "to do" list .
many thanks
