Dear all

R:
Freelander 2.0 TD4, Auto, 3 doors
69,000 miles,
Diff Casting Number: 51441
Annual Milerage: Approx 5,000

I have a TD4 which never lets me down on the road. Last month, when I had the MOT, I was adviced to contact you for the rear differential oil leak issue. Actually, it is not the "drop leak", but only wets the whole DIFF surface. I checked it and found that the leak point is the joint of the RH rear driveshaft and the Diff.

I am planing to drive it to Europe at this Christmas. Is this caused by dead diff oil seal? Is it a serious problem? What should I do?

Thank you very much.

Both of my diff seals are a little 'weepy'. :(

They've been like that for the last 2 years - 27K miles - been to Greece and back 4 times. No probs. :)

I bought a litre of 80W-90 oil and check the diff oil level every 2 months - I doubt if I've used more than 50ml of it in that time. :)

If it gets worse I might consider replacing the seals - as it is I can live with it. :D

hi guys my freelander has been bomb proof for three years and dry as a stick but just the other day lots of oil dripping from rear diff my brother in law is a mechanic and says its the drive shaft oil seal its really pi....g out any other thoughts!!!!

Clean it and make sure there's oil in it. Then see where it's leaking and change the seal. Your brother in law is probably right.

changed the seal twice and its still leaking, vehicle drives great as usual but cant cure the leak, is it just the seal that goes back in no other parts im missing? really dont understand why its still leaking, neither can my mechanic brother in law (very frustrating and costly)

Strange that. Never done a rear diff seal before. Was it a good seal fitted? Also did you make sure the seal mating surfaces were clean? Is the diff breather blocked? Could be pressurising when the diff gets hot perhaps… Other than that it needs the seal changed again and make sure everything is clean. Also mating surfaces are smooth, and not damaged I guess.

Hi , did you use L R seals ?

Hi , did you use L R seals ?

yeah used LR seals both times, now spoke to landy dealer and they say it could only be the propshaft seal as it is only slightly moist copared to diff but they say oil will be flying back due to travel direction hence the dripping from the rear and centre of diff so will try that next!!

Hi , we live and learn, hope you get it sorted let us know cost of prop seal ,if so :)

I too have the same problem with the rear dif seals Mot advisory said leaking at rear dif I have it booked in for to be changed but was out in it today drove about 50 miles then stopped for about an hour, and when i was leaving it started fine but when reversing and trying to move forward something seized it wouldnt budge in either forward or reverse managed to finally move it really slowly back into parking space then it seemed to release and managed to drive all the way back home. Could this be caused by rear dif or something else? any advice would be grateful Its a FREELANDER TD4 56 PLATE also have the puddle of water in the secutity box in boot cant find cause for this either as roof/lining inside not wet and had new window motor fitted to back door

also no clunk sound just seized up wouldnt move when put into gear a nd then it finally moved about 2 mile per hour back into parking bay then just seemed to be fine when reversing out thought might be dif seizing up.
