Screeching freelander when starting

Good Morning All,

I need to pick your brains now.

When i start up sometimes i get a very very high pitched screeching sound, this can last for upto 30 seconds and can carry on when driving away.

1. It's definitely coming from the RHS of the engine bay.

2. Brand new alternator & pas belts fitted about 5000 miles ago.

3. If the car has been standing and the weather has been dry with no moisture the car doesn't make the noise.

4. If the car has been standing and it has been damp and there is moisture the car does make the noise, sometimes for a second sometimes nearly 30.

5. I'm wondering if i'm losing oil from my CAM cover as i have noticed some oil around the front of it, perhaps thats getting onto the belts? I've ordered a new cam cover gasket anyway.

6. On occasion when i've been pulling away and the screeching is doing it's best when it stops if feels as if some resistance has been removed from the engine, does that makes sense, could that be clutch bearing or just me?

If the weather is good at the weekend i'm going to take the RHS wheel and the small splash shield off and sit in the wheelarch and start it, knowing my luck it won't do it that time or it will and make my ears bleed due to the loudness.

Any pointers would be much appreciated.

Have you checked all of your belts to see if they are tight,could be that you may have a loose one thats squelling---Dave

That'd be my guess too, also check tension of the belts

it will be the alternator belt under tensioned....

It didin't do it at all last night leaving work, it was very cold here and very dry and it didn't do it this morning when it was wet and damp.

No screeching or squealing or anything.

I've got the new CAM cover gasket now so this weekend i'm replacing that, might stop any oil leaks to.

I'll take the belts off and i'll check and clean them and check the pulleys to and i'll check the water pump.

Next time it does it have some silicon spray handy and spray the alternator belt, if the noise stops you have found the problem

why would yu want to lubricate a piece of equipment which relies on friction to work?

try some belt dressing instead.

I did a few jobs on the car to try and work on the screeching / squeeling issue. I had a look at the CAM Cover because it looked like i was getting oil on the alternator belt and alternator.

The CAM cover on the front corners the bolts had been put in and not tightened up at all, just dropped in place.
The 2 small wire wool blocks for the front of the breather pipes to the inlet manifold were clogged up and not even in front of the pipes.
Cylinder 4 spark plug was swimming in oil, i think looking at this it was oil that had found it's way around a loose gassket.

I replaced the CAM cover gasket, took out the plugs and cleaned them all and measured the gaps, which was okay.
The 2 small wire wool blocks for breather pipes to the inlet manifold were cleaned and put in the right places.
The CAM cover was tightened down properly.

So far so good, she certainly feels better and the squeeling has stopped. I'm going to look at the belt tension anyway but i think the bottom bolt for the alternator has been put in back to front. To undo it i need to remove the undertray which i don't think is right.

If you look up through the wheelarch it can be reached without need for removal of the undertray.

i did some more tinkering over the weekend -

1. Changed inlet manifold gasket.
2. Changed expansion bottle for bigger one, removed the silly plastic screw.
3. Changed anti-roll bar bushes.
4. Changed coolant properly and flushed out pipes.
5. Replaced some of the background illumination bulbs.
6. Tensioned up alternator belt.
7. Tried to change exhaust manifold gasket, bolts and studs were seized solid so i thought bugger that i'm not snapping anything.

My heater which worked already now works brilliantly, i'm not losing coolant (not yet anyway), my fuel consumption seems to have improved (so far) and my alternator belt does not squeel at all (not yet anyway)...so far so good.

I'm not very mechanically orientated i'm more electrical but i have impressed myself and am quite pleased with what i did and the improvements i am seeing / feeling already in the hippo She's a good girl.
