just been reading the march issue of 'Land Rover Monthly' ( no. 164 .. march 2012 ) ..
be a 4 page article on buying an early freelander .. plus some side comments about
buying older RR's / Discos / Defenders ..

as mentioned keep a look out for the engines as well make sure it has a good service regime as well and all the normal gaylander problems, try and avoid a petrol the best one is the bmw 2 litre td4 i think try and avoid the v6 and 1.8 and make sure it has doors on it

Hi , the tyre issue on the freelander is very important , 4 the same make/model/size , driving the car shoud be smooth and quiet through the gears , with no droning ! had my td4 for over 2 years now and love it :)

Cheers, yeah it's the TD4 I'm looking at, all four tyres replaced approx 6 months ago and it's definitely got doors on it, result!

make sure it doesnt have any KY stains on the seats and the curlers are still in the safe box in the back, remove any pink fluffy dice and check for hidden scissor compartments.

otherwise go for it and learn to mince.
