power steering pulley out of line HELP!!

hi there

recently bought a 300 tdi (r reg) had it about 8-9 weeks and yesterday started to make a funny noise, anyway found out that it had shredded a belt. (when i bought it the guy said he'd put a new water pump housing onit)

i put a new belt on but the problem i have is that the power steering pulley ( at least i think its that one) is out of line with all the others and the belt is riding on the back edge of the pulley therefore causing it to shred.

i took the belt off and the pulley moves in and out on the shaft about 20mm. i put the belt back on in right position but it doesnt take long for the pulley to move outwards and cause the belt to rub again on the inner edge of the pulley.

can anybody tell me what this problem is? else i will end up spending a fortune on belts. any help would be much appreciated. thanks louis

You will need to go introduce yourself in the new members section first, then post a picture of the offending pulley (so we can identify it - to be sure). Shouldn't be that much axial play in any of the pulleys

thats only an estimate. its probably less but still pulls in and out on the shaft.

Hi,
Some of the steering pumps available have changed shape, they can be quite difficult to get in and out of the housing. Make sure that you locate the exact angle of the connectors before removing them or the hoses, make sure they go back in the same position or you will run out of expletives before you eventually give up and reposition them. Change your steering fluid and bleed the steering box afterwards. If the low pressure supply hose from the bottle to the pump is wet, this is a good time to replace this common failing.
