Hi guys.
I am new to this fun. Looking at a freelander 1 54 / 55 plate TD4.
I like the look of the Sport Premium but have read through posts on here regarding its place in Land Rover. I also like the HSE, and read it is softer on the ride and higher.
I have come from a bumpy TVR, Alpina B3s, Shogun SWB briefly to an Eclass Merc estate and want something on a par with the merc, if not slightly softer. Will this be the HSE or the Sport?
Can I also ask what the Full Winter Pack was / is?
In terms of performance, how would it compare to the Shogun?
Thanks

Hi, and welcome to LandyZone,

First off it's not really the HSE which is softer and higher - it's more a case of the Sport models being lower and with a mite harder struts than the rest of the Freelander range. My standard suspension FL on the road is not much softer than my BMW 528 on pot-holes and sleeping polizei. The FL of course has a lot more suspension travel for slowly negotiating very rough ground.

I have an HSE and with a few mods it's no slouch! I have not felt any loss by not having bought a Sport model. The cornering is NOT some roly-poly experience like early RangeRovers for example.

The Sport models have no engine or 'go-faster' mods.

I've driven most 4X4s both on and off-road - the Shogun is a 'tank'. A TD4 Freelander will run away and leave it - on, or off, road.

The full winter pack was an optional extra on lesser models but came as standard on HSEs - Heated seats, heated front screen, and a fbh (Fuel Burning Heater) Essential kit in my opinion.

If you want to 'press on' on twisty roads then the right choice of tyre is a factor. Likewise if you intend going off-road. The standard all-season tyres are a good compromise for most folks. I bought extra wheels and have 2 sets - one set M+S for off-road and winter and another 'road' set for the Summer.

Hope that helps you. If you need more info get back to me/us.

i've got a sport premium at the moment but have also had a hse, i couldn't tell the difference between them on ride quality if i'm perfectly honest!!! my sport premium is exactly the same spec as the hse except for the becker sat nav which is useless anyway! got the auto at the moment which is great but if you're after fuel economy then the manual will return at least 5 mpg more! 18 inch wheels on the sport against 17's on the hse (although i did put some sport wheels on my hse ;) ) no side rubbing strips as standard on the sport and thats about it i think!
