I looked it up... see that its a splined flange. I have no idea where it goes yet but the mere fact that there's no noise whilst driving leads me to believe its a stripped splined shaft somewhere which helps. I will strip down and report back with pics when I know. thanks for the idiot guide to LR 4x4 drivechain.
