Hi,

I will be visiting Lava hot Springs in Idaho this summer, and wondered
where some 4x4 trails might be? Can anyone recommend some Easy to
Moderate trails?

Thanks,
Allen H

Get yourself some topographical software and/or some BLM maps. There is a
series of topographical atlases by Delorme that are very good. There's one
for every state and they are quite detailed. BLM maps will give you better
detail but each one covers a much smaller area and are less convenient for
exploring. You can be versatile with software and you can search and plan
routes with relevant information such as distance and elevation. You can
also print out your maps and if you have a laptop computer you can take it
on the road. The software will even find the best routes with only start and
stop points entered. Once you can identify certain roads and trails from the
maps you can call the local BLM field offices or the local rangers and
they'll give you the information on conditions that you need.

If you can justify it, get yourself a GPS receiver and if you don't have
one, a laptop computer, even a cheap used one.. With topographical software
this will give you real time tracking on a live map. You will have active
maps that guide you through planned routes or help you find them on the fly.
This is very helpful if you get into a rougher then desired situation and
want to find an alternate course or are simply exploring. It always shows
you where you are and you'll never get lost even when exploring down blind
roads and trails.

The map book will cost you about $20.00 and BLM maps generally run around
$6.00 each. That's all you really need along with a decent sense of
direction and map reading skills. Software such as Delorme Topo runs about
$100.00 with a very frequent $30.00 discount. It covers the entire US
including Hawaii and Alaska. I wouldn't be without it in the southwest
desert. If you were only going to use the GPS receiver with the laptop you
could get a 'no screen, no memory' one for around $100.00. However if you
want one for hiking or use as a stand a lone unit a decent one runs around
$350.00 with another $100.00 - $150.00 for needed accessories. 4 AA
batteries last about 8 hours on my Garmin 12Map although there is a
cigarette lighter power cord. I've installed a pedestal with an articulated
arm and a platform (Jotto Desk) in my truck for my laptop.

have fun.....
