Hi Ladies and Gents

I've recently recommissioned my freelander td4, and one of the problems that lead to me parking it up was the multi CD player 'dropping off' as in the head unit not detecting it. Is there a common fault with these that I can look to try, I've unplugged it and reconnected it, I couldn't see any obvious defects in the wiring but I haven't followed it fully under the carpet. My good lady wife and my 13yo daughter are not impressed.

You stopped using a vehicle because the CD player didn't work. You are lucky to access to another vehicle for such a tiny problem.
I expect the CD is either broken or isn't connected to the HU at the HU end. I've never seen a CD wiring fault, although I suppose it could happen.

No, I didn't park up because of a stereo problem, it was one of around 10 issues, including diff mounts, front and rear brakes, drop links, exhaust back box, broken window regulator, and faulty sunroof. We'd had the car 6 years at this point. CD changer is connected as occasionally it will be playing and the cut out

That usually means the CD unit is conking out. Mine did a similar thing before it died. I was lucky and picked up a new old stock one dirt cheap, but they are very thin on the ground now. Consider putting a new head unit in with D.A.B and phone connectivity, it's alot easier and brings you up to date for around £100.

Thanks that's what is was thinking, but didn't want to splash out if there was an easy fix.
