How big can tyres safely go without spacers or lift?

Hi guys,

I'm just wondering what is the maximum tyre size you can reasonably fit on a Freelander without mods? My current size is 215/65 r16. I've decided to go for some nice AT tyres for fun but keep it stock otherwise to simplify insurance and all that crap.

I am running 215/80R15 on steel wheels (exactly the same size as 205/80R16). Pretty close to the spring seats on the struts, and wouldnt imagine you could go much wider without spacers, or modular wheels.

I do have a 2" lift fitted, but you dont need it for those tyres

Thanks Mikey :).

I was considering 225/65 or 215/70 - but looking at the price difference I think I may stick with 215/65 at the moment. At that size it won't be worth forking out for BFG AT's so I'm goig to try the new GG AT. I'll look after them so perhaps if the time comes when I have the cash and have a reason to add the 2" lift and get bigger tyres I can sell the GG's as part worn (but safe for freelanders!)

Will.
