Hi people

I have a 2003 TD4 (pre facelift)

The horn doesnt work on the car but:

- Horn works on alarm mode
- Steering wheel controls work (has sony stereo with pc99-x32 wire)
- Fuses fine

Any idea what it could be and what to try next? Dont fancy taking it to a garage and being ripped off.

Cheers people

Horn issues are normally the clock spring.
You'll need to find a working second hand replacement, as they are NLA.

Ive had a few people say a the rotary couple, could it be this? The steering wheel does sometimes make a crunching noise when pulling away and turning, but as stated, the steering controls work.

Yes the rotary coupler (clock spring) is the most common cause. The other controls could well be ok as there are about a dozen connections running through the clock spring. The horn is the only connection that takes a decent amount of current though.

The steering shouldn't crunch though. That could signify a faulty column bush.

must confess Nodge, when the clock spring is goosed, the column can appear to 'crunch' (depending on the actual definition of crunch which is hard to portray._) ... :( - usually as the CS reaches the limits it tends to grind the plastic.
On an electric PS vehicle the CS is far more complex but on our humble FL's, it is a piece of plastic junk really :)

I had the same problem with the rotary coupler. Meter out all the connections and if you can find two good ones then use them. If someone had the steering column disconnected and rotated the wheel then reconnected it then your coupler will be fecked as the coupler will be in the wrong position compared to the rack. Don't ask me how I know.
