Headlight Bulbs

I've a 2003 non-facelift Freelander 1, one thing that is noticeable particularly on the unlit country roads round where I live is that the headlights aren't particularly bright.

I've searched and not seen much discussion on the subject. Is there a better set of bulbs that can be used and are they easy enough to replace, or is it just a case of living with what there is?
