I know its not good a newby starting a first thread with a problem :D but hey can anyone help?, I have the 1.8 on a 99 plate and got the usual power loss when warm/hot yesterday had to leave it cool down for 15 mins about 5 times to get home so I did the usual checks after looking on here and found that when taking the plug of the temp sensor the fans kick in and don't anyother time including when AC is turned on, am I on the right track? cheers

I found that when I unplugged the temp sensor during maintainance the gauge goes all the way up - if your ecu is still operating then it would make sense if the fans kicked in.

You say you had to stop and cool five times, that is not normal! As a first measure I strongly suggest getting your coolant tested for hydrocarbons as it sounds like you might be getting exhaust in the coolant causing airlocks. Once that is done then we'll know whether it is HGF or a dicky sensor.

Welcome to the forums :).

Thanks for the reply, I have also changed the inlet manifold gasket as it was leaking and I believe I bleed the system correctly can this also contribute to a possible air lock and such symptoms?

It is very unlikely that this would happend if you bled the system according to instruction. This is exactly what happened to mine, and I had to do the head gasket and I also fitted a better cooling system to stop it happening again. However, until you know whether exhaust gasses are to blame I wouldn't go buying anything. Luckily, if this is HGF, you have caught it very early and the repair is just a repair and not a massive cleanup as well. Let us know how that test goes :).

when you said you bled the system correct did you take the small tube of the header tank and blow into the tube to open up the valve in the head

yes but to me it was blocked even tho coolant was coming out when I replaced the gasket on the inlet, i did clean it is was full of cr@p in side the manifold side of it

Not much of a update but I have the freelander back and engine is ok no HGF, lucky enough the cutting out happened when at the garage which has led the machanic to believe it has a blockage in the exhaust system so I will be taking the exhaust of soon and will check
