Having had my landy for a year now, I'm looking to take it abroad to either France of Ireland. Does anyone know of the laws regarding the rights of access and what constitutes a green lane type of road in either country? Has anyone been to either country and can offer some tips?

Cheers, 'bait.

I've looked into the Green Lanes situation in France quite a bit. As far as I can tell, the law is pretty simple. As long as a normal car sized vehicle can drive down it without causing damage (i.e. rutting the sides, ripping out plants/hedges etc.) then you can legally drive down them. In reality you're unlikely to find anyone in France who'll report you unless you are doing something particularly stupid.

Plenty of lanes here to explore :D I get the local IGN maps and they are all marked - "chemin rural" I think they are marked up as on the key, but been a while since I looked. The local marie can close them if they feel they are being damaged, but I think they are required to post signs as I recall. Be wary of ones in forests as most of them are owned by the French forestry authority and are closed to the public.

I'm off to southern France over the summer, sadly I'll be flying in and hiring a car this time, but next time I'll get a ferry and take the 110.
