I'm going from memory as I did this conversion 6 years ago, so go easy if I make a mistake or miss something 
If you have no front drive it's likely the gearbox output shaft to the left hand drive shaft. It's a common fault on the L series due to it's higher torque but it can affect the 1.8 too. Changing to 2wd with a box from another rover is possible. The main problem will be the drive shafts. The 1.8 Rovers use a smaller diameter spline than the Freelander Iirc so this is were you will have the most work. Once you are running in 2wd you can simply remove the rear diff, pull the outer rear drive shaft CV joint apart so the stub axle can still be used and cover the hole left by the CV joint innards with a round piece of plate steel. I think that's about all I can remember!! Good luck
