Hi everyone, I'd be really grateful if you could tell me if you've had the same problem...and what the solution might be. I have a Freelander year 2000, diesel (NOT a TD). The engine chuggs/hesitates and eventually cuts out. Will restart after a couple of hours. I've replaced the fuel filter and the air flow metre - so not those. (Is there a crankcase filter in models that are not turbo diesel??).
Grateful for any advice....

First off ,it is an xedi Lseries td but not the bmw td4 . The crankcase filter is attached to the bulkhead on the right as you look in .
it looks like the one below , lifted from goggle images

Sounds like fuel starvation/air in the system. Does it misfire before it stops and does it take a long time to restart when it eventually starts.

Thanks guys...
Nickcc - not sure if it misfires, but keeps chugging, hesitating, then eventually I just have to stop the car - it then cuts out and won't start. Yes, then will have to leave it for about an hour before it will start again.
Thanks again :)

Ecu takes signal from temp sensor and crank position sensor and alters parameters accordingly, if one goes down it could cause those exact symptoms.
Only suggesting as a mate with a Hippo had same issues ;)

Had a problem with the crankshaft sensor on a previous car, the symptoms were that it would start when cold (running on the ECU parameters as Boomer states) but fail to start when hot, leave it for about 30 mins and then it would start and run OK until the next time you stopped it. Some members suggest using a freezer spray on the sensor to see if it starts straight up again, never used it myself so a bit of trial and error.
