Freelander 2 TD4 XS 2012 Engine Oil

Hi, I have a 6 month old Freelander 2 and have checked the oil a few times since i got it. The oil has mostly been clear and the level ok. Just checked it this morning and its halfway between low and high and its now black.

My 10 year old Ford never had black oil!!!

Is the oil level ok and if I top it up why type of oil do I beed, visit normal for it to be black on a 6 month old veh? Or is this normal with Diesel engines? Only done about 4k.

I just googled it and found its very common for the fl2 to drink a bit of oil .I read 5w30 or 0w30 is recommended by the manufacturer and some reckon thats too thin and to use 10w40 or 5w40 .

In the first 2-3,000 miles your Td4 will probably use about 0.5-1ltr of engine oil. If you read your user manual, LR state that it can use alot more in the first few thousand miles.

Its standard for the engine to us around 1ltr in its first 5k miles i would say.

Why does it burn the oil? I know diesels do, but does it burn more due to the bedding in process?

In the old days when I was a lad,New cars used to have an oil service after 500 miles or so.
This was to get rid of the swarfe etc produced during running in.
These days there seems to be no running in period and the car may not get a service for at least a year.
Also oils are much better, which in itself prolongs the bedding in.

I don`t think of myself as old,but I can remember seeing cars with a board in the back window saying running in please pass.

Some engines burn oil when their running in, some dont.

The new Td4 does in its first couple of thousand miles.

Not seen one using oil after that though.

Its just when its running in.

I can remember seeing cars on a fore court have notices in the window saying HEATER as you did not get a heat fitted as standard.
