Help. I need to replace the engine in my 1999 1.8i Freelander - head gasket failure. I want to install the best performing engine option I can find. I am aware there are VVC and non VVC engine types, I assume my is a non VVC, can anyone explain the best options available. :rolly:Would a 2002 model engine be compatible?

Thanks for your help

Chris

I recently suggested the 160 bhp Rover engine to some one who was talking about modifying theirs, another user very quickly pointed out that it would need the correct ECU and a fair bit of additional wiring, the simplest swap would be to the same spec of engine.

that applies to any non standard non identical injun.

the easiest no standard lump is the T220 turbo injun & ecu. it will mate with the pg1 box and gives yu the option of LSD.

look & yu shall find.

The VVC 160bhp engine would be interesting but you really need to rev it hard to get the extra power as it doesn't come in until after 4k revs then up the the rev limit around 7.2k so probably not really suited to the Freelander + you would need the wiring look and ecu.

Other choices would be the TF 1.8 engine which has 135bhp (different cams, inlet manifold and air box) or the K series 1.8 turbo which might work well in a Freelander
