First timer guidance on a new (to me) Land Rover

Buy a late model freelander, and a normal car for the good weather.

Any proper large 4x4 any make that does not not have continual tlc will end up breaking you mentally and financially!

Normal cars see the garage for mot and an annual service, no land rovers are like that even if the owners tell you otherwise.

Skoda Yeti 4x4 good car.
Audi A6 allroad very good car, only 3.0tdi version, 2.0tdi are trouble, nothing multitronic ever! S tronic and DSG both good, seriously good mpg for such an engine.

To be fair, buying any car around 8-10 years old it's reasonable to expect things to go wrong, but it's really useful oto me you pointed out the common things. It's a fair point to keep a slush fund for the "what if's".
I've seen ads that state the cambelt has been changed and so, would look for service history to verify.
Excellent point about warranty and will research that further.

I've not bought a used car for several years, been buying new (MUCH cheaper small cars) which tend to take much of the risk out of it.

It's not if, it's when. When the air suspension packs up. When something else goes wrong... Yer looking to buy a complex vehicle. They become cheaper at 100k miles for a reason. Same as range rovers. Be careful.

We often take the p*ss on ere. We all laff and joke about other members vehicles. But running costs are high for some vehicles. Having to factor in thousands of pounds of spare cash for when it goes wrong needs some serious thinking... As above, get a Freelander 2.

Ref the Disco 4, do some research on crankshaft failures, have a really good read, then think real hard before committing yourself.
I can remember one bloke writing, it was like driving a 30k hand grenade waiting for the pin to drop out, and that really does sum up anything with the 3.0 sdv6 engine.
