Engine Fan

I'm not getting any overheating problems but I notice that whenever I'm parked up (engine not running) my fan is really tight. You can just about turn it with two hands and a good bit of effort. However when the engine is running it spins properly.

Just wondered whether this is a normal thing? It's a 19j. Everything looks fine / no belts too tight etc.

If engine is fitted with original type fan on the water pump pully then that would be normal.
How it works.
When engine cold the fan is free to spin on its shaft with only a little resistance, it will be turning with engine running but not at full speed.
When the engine warms up the wax unit behind the fan firms up and the fan is then driven at engine speed pulling more cooling air through the radiator

Engine cold and ticking over for a minute or two, then get a rolled up newspaper and try and stop the fan spinning, if it eats your mewspaper the fan is dead.
Watch your bloody fingers!

your being far to safe and sensible there with your newspaper! The last one I did you just gently touch the outer edge of the fan blade with a finger to slow it down (or not if broken). what you do not do it stick fingers into the spinning fan, that would be a newpaper job!

Are the mechanism's of the fan serviceable at all ?

In the UK people just replace faulty viscous fan hub, but never having stripped one down I have no idea if they could be repaired?
I think they are circa 40 GBP per hub.

TBH that is pretty much what I do, but to suggest to others to do so might not be a good idea!
