EGR Removal With Thick Oil

I have done a search for the oil in EGR but just need convincing on something:

I have just cleaned my EGR Valve TD4 110,000 miles Freelander, whilst cleaning the EGR I discovered quite a bit of thick oil around the valve, also on the bottom of the plastic manifold there is thick oil. My screwdriver sank into it.

Is this normal for a TD4?

Yes it's normal.

The oil is your engine oil that has passed through the turbo - as it is designed to do / must do - as the turbo-shaft 'floats' in oil.

What has happened is that the EGR valve has allowed the exhaust gasses laden with filthy black soot / carbon particles to pollute the oil and form the syrupy paste that clogs everything up.

You can disable the EGR by taking off the vacuum pipe and blocking it.

Better still - fit an EGR stainless steel by-pass and fix the problem for ever.

Thanks for that Singvogel. Much appreciated . I have taken off the braided hose and stuck a screw in it for now.
