Hi

I've got a 53 plate Freelander, whilst driving the car at 50Mph and above you get a whoop whoop whoop (stop laughing) noise from the front end of the car. On inspection I have found some play in the inner nearside front drive shaft. But the play is between the CV outer and IRD not the driveshaft, does that make sense?. I assume there is a bearing inside the IRD that holds the CV square, is it normal for that bearing to go?. Or does this noise mean something else and I'm chasing red herrings.

Mnay thanks

PS i've got one week to fix this as we are on holiday after that.

The transmission set up at the front end is quite complex and odd noises can be very difficult to track. I know from recent experience that a noisy wheel bearing whilst having no free play when checked, can sound like the IRD is about to give up. M&S tyres also can develop faults which may produce mechanical type noise through the transmission. If you have a local transmission specialist have them give an opinion, it may save a lot of time etc.

Could be free play in the IRD differential, this will not get better and could wreck the driveshaft as well as causing the FL to lose drive.
