Goto your nearest BMW parts desk and ask for part number 11127799367. They call it an oil seperator. It replaces the standard lr part that requires changing at every service. this one you can fit and forget.
Easy to fit, its just infront if the air filter housing, bout half hour job.
Hope this helps

would this also fit my 55 plate TD4? Seems worth it if it doesn't have to be changed all the time

Fitted new type crank case filter took me about an hour but i am a bit slow looked at egr while i had the pipe off not to bad sticky oil in it will change unit when founds allow

£23.98 from BMW. You dont need the full asm. You just need the filter part and it comes with 2 gaskets and an 'o' ring

Yes bargain and the other thing i noticed has a notch on the right lower side wonder if they have modified for different housing

the only thing with fitting these new bits rather than the old filter it will not stop any swarf I would rather gange a filter every time but thats just me old fashioned

They don't come more 'old-fashioned' than me, I learned mechanics with plugs, points, adjustable tappets, feeler guages, and dynamos, back in the days when petrol was four and sevenpence ha'penny a gallon!

But I like this Dyson-style mod and I'm happy for any swarf as you say to be stopped by the regular filter and the magnetic drain plug I've fitted - only a slight 'fur' usually on it.

I reckon that any swarf left from factory machining would have been long gone by now though.

It isn't a filter and is not designed to remove swarf from the oil.
All it does is remove oil from the fumes in the crankcase and vent excess pressure to the inlet ducting by the turbo.
