hi all. i have a 1999 1.8 petrol freelander. just wondering if anyone knows roughly how long the car will idle for before the fans kick in? ive owned it 2 months but i have never heard the fans start. i can leave it idling for 15-20 mins and they still dont start. im not sure whether its just not getting hot enough for them to be needed or whether there is a problem with the fans somewhere. i know they work as they start when i disconnect the brown temp sensor plug. any help would be great. cheers

Im not sure. My air con stopped working when i was driving a couple of weeks ago. the light on the switch does not light up. i have checked the fuse

Hi Kev,

At this time of year it's highly unlikely that the fans will come on at all - no matter how long you leave it idling.

With the AC on they may kick in for a few moments every now and again. They do not stay on all the time when the AC is on.

Remember that the cooling system is designed to cope with +40C or more, so a UK winter isn't going to ask much from it.

Caio,

Singvogel.

on my April 2000 L-Series I've only noticed the fans starting in summer-time (over 30ºC), if I get some traffic arriving home after a long drive

I never heard mine come on at all, til I replaced the head gasket:eek:

In these recent temperatures I haven't heard it come on. It doesn't get hot enough.:)

No worries

Check the coolant etc in the mean time.

Do loads of searches on here for problems and settle down to read and learn :)

my wife car went for the mot today and he had it running throughout the mot to keep the engin warm for the emissions test as he said and after about 20-25 mins the fans cam on fist time I have heard them i though a plane was landing
